How to Care for Your Affenpinscher

Coat, Companionship & ShowThyme Tips

Whether your Affenpinscher is a cherished companion or a distinguished show dog, here’s everything you need to know to maintain their playful personality, wiry coat, and confident demeanour in top condition, from daily grooming to treats, toys, and more.

Show-Ready vs Couch-Ready

Show dogs: We will need more regular grooming, including stripping, shaping, and tidy-ups for the face and feet to maintain within breed standards. Judges are looking for a neat, natural outline, a good saddle and jacket, and well-maintained details.

Companion Affens: They don’t require the same precision but still benefit from tidy trims and regular brushing to stay comfortable and clean, especially around their expressive faces and busy paws.

Grooming That Signature Look:

The Affenpinscher Coat

Everyday & Weekly Coat Care

  • Brush 2–3 times a week with a slicker brush or metal comb to keep the coat tidy and prevent mats, especially around the beard, legs, and armpits.
  • Use a conditioning spray or light mist to reduce static and help work through knots gently.
  • For show dogs, focus on maintaining texture and outline. Companion dogs can have a slightly looser grooming schedule, but keeping that “cheeky teddy bear” look still requires consistency.

Hand-Stripping vs Clipping

  • For a true show-standard finish, hand-stripping (plucking out dead hairs) every 4–8 weeks helps maintain coat texture, colour, and condition.
  • For pets, clipping is a more acceptable and easier-to-manage option. Just be aware the coat may soften and lighten over time.

Bathing Tip

Bathe only once a month or just before a show. Always brush after washing to reset the coat and avoid tangles.

Teeth, Toes & More: Total Grooming Routine

  • Ears: Check weekly for cleaning as needed, especially before shows.
  • Eyes: Wipe any discharge with a clean, damp cloth.
  • Nails: Trim monthly. Short nails = better movement and comfort.
  • Teeth: Small dogs are prone to plaque buildup, so brush their teeth 2–3 times a week or use chews that help with their teeth care.

Treats That Suit Small Breeds

Affenpinschers may be tiny, but they’ve got big appetites for flavour and fun.

  • Small, soft training treats (perfect for short attention spans!)
  • Freeze-dried meat (great high-value reward, especially for shows)
  • Kibble portions as treats (convenient for maintaining a show weight)
  • Dental sticks to support oral health

Avoid sticky, crumbly treats that might mat their beard, especially if you’re on the way to a ribbon!

Toy Time: Keep That Curious Mind Busy

These pint-sized comedians are clever and curious. With their playtime and stimulation, they’ll find their own (often cheeky) ways to stay busy.

Great toy choices:

  • Puzzle toys (hide treats inside for nose work)
  • Squeaky plush toys (perfect for terrier-style play)
  • Soft tug ropes (satisfies their desire to grip and shake)
  • Small fetch balls or KONGs (durable and rewarding)

Mix it up and rotate toys every week to keep their interest high.

Movement Matters: Walks, Play & Social Time

Despite their size, Affens are lively and alert and love being included in your routine.

  • 2 short walks a day (20–30 mins is plenty)
  • Off-lead play in safe areas helps with energy and confidence
  • Training sessions or fun tricks are great for bonding

Showing tip: Practice stacking and standing calmly with treats, even if you’re not showing. It builds confidence and makes vet visits easier as well.

A Final Word from ShowThyme

Affenpinschers are bursting with personality, proud, playful, and full of spark. With just a bit of regular coat care, the right accessories, and a few clever toys, they’ll stay as beautiful as ever, whether they’re curled up on your couch or strutting their stuff in the show ring.
